White dove – Plečnik's church

White dove – Plečnik's church

In Plečnik’s masterpiece in Bogojina, you can feel the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.

Plečnik built the church in Bogojina with all respect for his ancestors and for the area of Prekmurje, which became dear to him. He took into account local building traditions and used elements of early Christian architecture (stone columns, flat wooden ceilings).

The Bogojina Church (built between 1924 and 1927), designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, is one of the most unique and modern church buildings in Europe. World-class architecture was created, perfectly connecting the old with the new, and specifically for this part of the world. Franc Bajlec from Bogojina, who attended Plečnik’s school, informed his professor that the priest Ivan Baša and the people of Bogojina wished to build a new church. The snow-white building is also called the ‘white dove’ by the locals. The round bell tower greets visitors from afar, as it is, in addition to the ceiling decorated with local, hand-made pottery, truly a sight to behold.

The architect Jože Plečnik. How did the small village of Bogojina end up on the same list as three Central European capitals of Plečnik’s architecture: Vienna, Prague and Ljubljana? The story behind this is interesting, as are the biographical facts that testify to what Plečnik’s first impression was when he encountered the people of Prekmurje, the potters of Filovci, the locals, Bogojina, and the local ‘slivovica’ plum brandy. The master builder himself once said: “Who would have thought that such a small town as Bogojina would have such a grand idea?”
